Charlotte Amalie
Have I done a post about the Library of Congress project at Flickr? It's an extraordinary project--making thousands of archival photos (from color transparencies) available to the public. There are no copyright restrictions, so we're able to re-use and print them. (See FAQ here.)
Surfing around in their stream on Friday morning, I came across this image of 'downtown' St. Thomas. The proper name of the town of St. Thomas is Charlotte Amalie. This photo was taken in 1941, which is what struck me...because it still looks like this. There's an incredible amount of history there. I worked in an 1800's Danish-style building on Government Hill that had been my employer's childhood home. I could stand at the fax machine in our open-air office and gaze out at the Charlotte Amalie harbor. More USVI LOC photos are here.
